Twinnings of Larnaka

The institution of twinnings between cities of Cyprus and abroad slowly started appearing after the independence of Cyprus in 1960. After the Turkish Invasion, the institution was strengthened due to the desire of many authorities of Local Government abroad and especially in Greece to help Cyprus. But the institution was developed after the change in the Cypriot legislation about Municipalities and the election of the first elected Municipal Council in 1986. Simultaneously, the then European Economic Community (E.E.C) considered the institution as especially useful for the cooperation between the Community Authority of Local Government and it was encouraged through motives.

The first elected Municipal Council of Larnaka, headed by the then Mayor Mr. Georgios Christodoulides, moved on to a number of twinnings based on criteria, such as the existence of a Cypriot Community in the under twinning city, the political expediency with cities of countries that supported the fight of Cyprus and with Greek cities with similar characteristics with Larnaka during its term of office (1986-1991). Thus, on 30/7/1987, the suburb of Haringey of the United Kingdom became the first twinning city of Cyprus. The then Mayor of Haringey was of Cypriot Origin and its population included a great number of Cypriots and many of them were from Larnaka and the wider area. The second part of the twinning was held in Haringey on 12/4/1998 during the mayoralty of Georgios Lycourgos and the ceremonies and events also included a big exhibition about Zeno of Citium in London.

Then, during the mayoralty of Georgios Christodoulides, the Municipal Council proceeded with twinnings with the city of Poti of Georgia of the then Soviet Union on 17/9/1987. The second part was held in Larnaka on 27/7/1998 during the Mayoralty of Georgios Lycourgos. Then, there were twinnings with Bratislava of Czechoslovakia on 7/1/1989, with Larisa on 24/5/1990 and Ajaccio of Corsicca on 10/1/1989.

During the Mayoralty of Georgios Lycourgos (1991-2001), there were similar twinnings with similar criteria. On 28/6/1993, a cooperation agreement was signed with the capital of Siberia, Novorsibirsk and with the city of Szeged of Hungary on 6/11/1993. Then, there were twinnings with Saranda of Albania on 11/7/1994, where the then Mayor was of Greek origin. The second phase was held on 10/9/2002 during the Mayoralty of Andreas Moyseos. On 28/4/1998, there was a twinning with Glyfada due to the close relations of the Rotary Clubs of the two cities. Within the frameworks of this twinning, Glyfada Rotary Club offered the art work “To salpisma tis irinis” (“The fanfare of peace”) of the artist Nicolas that was put opposite the Municipal Theatre of Larnaka. The twinning with Piraeus was on 26/7/1999 and its second phase was held in Larnaka on 23/3/2001. Finally, there were twinnings with Ilioupoli on 29/9/2000 and with Leros on 27/9/2000, where the second phase was held in Larnaka on 4/7/2003 during the Mayoralty of Andreas Moyseos.

During the Mayoralty of Andreas Moyseos, there were also twinnings with the city of Tulcea of Romania on 27/5/2003, with the second phase taking place in Larnaka on 28/1/2004. On 16/11/2003, there was a ceremony in Larnaka for the twinning with Giannitsa and the second phase took place on 15/5/2004 in Giannitsa. The twinning with Odessos of Ukrania was on 3/9/2004. Marrickville of Australia, where there are many people in the Cypriot Community, was twinned with Larnaka in a ceremony in Australia on 9/5/2005 and the respective ceremony in Larnaka was on 29/6/2005. Finally, due to the close political relations of Cyprus with China, Larnaka Municipality was twinned with the city of Tianjin in a ceremony in Larnaka on 17/5/2007 and in the city of Tianjin on 19/5/2008.

During the Mayoralty of Andreas Moyseos, a twinning with Venice of Italy was achieved and this was officially held in Venice in May 2010 and with the city of Florida Tarpon Spring of the USA that is the seat of migrant Greek sponge divers and it was held in January 2009. Larnaka has created good conditions of cooperation with its twinned cities that cover the sectors of artistic exchanges, cultural events, contacts with the migrant Cypriots, common historical route and joint participation in European Programs.
