Development of the “Ai Gianni” Area

Development of the "Ai Gianni" Area

Description:

The redevelopment project of the Agios Ioannis parish focuses on improving and reconstructing the existing roads, widening sidewalks, upgrading the stormwater drainage system, enhancing infrastructure and public utility networks, undergrounding services, installing urban equipment, upgrading lighting, improving road signage, and reorganizing traffic flow. The project also includes the pedestrianization of the Agios Ioannis – Metropolis/Mosque axis, merging public square spaces, organizing parking, and redesigning the bus route. The project is within the Municipality of Larnaca and encompasses significant landmarks such as the Church of Agios Ioannis, the historic bathhouse, the fountain in the square near the mosque, and Tzoula Mosque.

The overall design shifts the parish from a vehicle-centric area to a pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly environment, ensuring full accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The reconstruction and enhancement of roads and the area will contribute to its aesthetic and functional improvement, making it a reference point while increasing traffic safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and PWDs. Additionally, the project aims to enhance green spaces, improve the quality of the public space, and highlight the architectural, urban, historical, social, and environmental significance of the area.

Alongside road reconstruction, utility services will be placed underground, LED street lighting and appropriate signage will be installed. The project ultimately aims to promote sustainable mobility, facilitate accessibility for PWDs, increase greenery, positively impact the microclimate through planting, and highlight the area’s traditional character. Upon completion, the Municipality envisions the creation of a distinct central hub for the parish, which is currently missing, despite the area’s importance as a religious tourism destination in Larnaca.

Project Stage:

The tender documents have been prepared and submitted to the Department of Town Planning and Housing, which co-finances the project, for review. Following approval, the documents will be submitted to the General Accounting Office to obtain a Tender Document Approval Certificate.
