Redevelopment of Roads and Squares in the Urban Center of Larnaka

Brief Description / Objective:

The project involves the second phase of the redevelopment of streets and the facilitation of access for people with disabilities in the urban center of Larnaca, as well as the redevelopment of Zouchouri Square, which is located in the intervention area. The aim of the project is to revitalize the urban environment and upgrade existing infrastructure to promote urban mobility and accessibility.

  • Redevelopment of the Square and Facade Improvement in Zouchouri (4,860 sq.m.):
    The first sub-project focuses on upgrading the Zouchouri building complex, one of Larnaca’s most important historical landmarks. The project includes:
    1. Courtyard redevelopment: Creation of green spaces, paved areas, resting zones, and small event spaces.
    2. Restoration of internal facades: Maintenance of the building facades facing the courtyard.
    3. Guesthouse upgrade: Restoration and modernization of the guesthouse infrastructure.
    4. Ground-floor building renovation: This building will serve as a management and information office and as an entrance from Kleanthi Kalogera Street.
    5. Implementation of accessibility measures for people with disabilities.
  • AMEA II – Redevelopment of Roads and Accessibility for People with Disabilities in Larnaca’s Urban Center – Phase B (15,000 sq.m.):
    The second sub-project involves the improvement and reconstruction of key roads and public spaces in Larnaca’s urban center, focusing on meeting citizen needs and facilitating accessibility for people with disabilities. Specifically, it includes:
    1. Road reconstruction: Removal of asphalt layers and installation of paving stones.
    2. Sidewalk widening: Improving accessibility for pedestrians and people with disabilities.
    3. Infrastructure upgrades: Enhancement of stormwater systems, underground utility networks, and lighting.
    4. Traffic signage and road safety: Strengthening the safety and usability of the road network.
    5. Urban equipment: Installation of new electronic information points and modern urban elements.

The project covers Ermou, Zinonos Kitieos, Galileou, Nikolaou Rossou, N.D. Dimitriou, Kosma Lysioti, Evanthias Pieridou, Filliou Zannetou, and Evriviadou streets.

Through these upgrades, Larnaca strengthens its position as a city that promotes its historical heritage, sustainability, and accessibility for all.

Expected Benefits / Outcomes:

The project aims to: (a) Revitalize the urban environment through functional and aesthetic improvements to the Zouchouri complex, highlighting its historical and traditional character, and functionally connecting it to the surrounding area and road network to attract local and foreign visitors.

(b) Aesthetic and functional upgrading of Larnaca’s main roads, ensuring smooth and safe access for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, with a particular emphasis on implementing measures for people with disabilities.

The project targets the improvement of transportation infrastructure through planned maintenance interventions, traffic management, and organization, ultimately enhancing the vitality of the area while preserving its unique characteristics.

Environmental upgrades will boost the area’s commercial appeal and competitiveness, increasing its vitality. The project will also improve the image of the region and the built environment, accessibility, and attractiveness, encouraging pedestrian movement and bicycle use, and ultimately enhancing the quality of life.
