Redevelopment of the Pattichio Park Area

Brief Description / Objective:

The project involves the upgrade of the existing infrastructure and facilities of the Park, including the construction of an elevated bridge, viewing points, an open-air gym, recreation areas and a playground, as well as the creation of a botanical garden and walking and cycling paths. The aim of the project is to create a green lung for use and enjoyment by all citizens.

Expected Benefits / Outcomes:

The project falls within the scope of the maturation of new projects by the Municipality of Larnaca and will contribute to enhancing the microclimate of the area, while creating a natural green lung near the city center, providing comfortable and safe conditions for users.

Residents and visitors will have the opportunity to engage in physical activities, socialize, attend cultural events, and observe the Salt Lake and the natural beauty of the surrounding area of Patticheio Park from privileged viewpoints.

Additionally, the Patticheio Amphitheater will be upgraded, with chairs being installed, and there will be permanent 24-hour security patrols.

The design was carried out by the architectural firm Chrysanthos Chrysanthou & Associates, with the main focus on respecting the environment and the sensitive surrounding area of the park and Salt Lake, as well as fostering active interaction between users and the park. Various infrastructures will be created, including an elevated circular footbridge around the existing amphitheater, a new café-restaurant, and a playground adjacent to the footbridge, reinforcing the park’s core around the amphitheater.

A botanical garden with aromatic plants will be created for walking and relaxation, leading to a water feature, along with the enhancement of the plaza space at the entrance of the existing amphitheater, with new shelters, an exhibition space, and a waiting area.

Two viewing platforms will be constructed for events and observing the Salt Lake, new walking paths will be enriched with new plantings and guidance/information signs, a sufficient number of parking spaces will be added at various points in the park along with restroom facilities, and the plaza space at the park’s existing monument will be reconstructed, with substantial green space enhancement through the planting of new trees and plants.

At Patticheio Park, the existing infrastructure will also be repaired, including the walkways and park entrances, the lighting will be replaced with new, anti-vandalism technology, the urban equipment will be replaced/upgraded, and the fencing will be maintained or redesigned.

Once completed, the park will become fully accessible to all citizens, including pedestrians, cyclists, and people with disabilities, with controlled and limited vehicle access only for the service of the Patticheio Amphitheater (e.g., for stage sets, supplies, etc.).

The project is co-funded by the EU within the framework of the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021-2027”.
