«Together, we keep Larnaka clean»
The Sanitation Department is the largest department of the Municipality in terms of labor and staff. Its main objectives are to maintain the cleanliness of the Municipality, ensure the proper management of waste, and provide service and information to citizens on issues related to cleanliness and proper waste management.
The Municipality of Larnaka continuously strengthens its efforts to maintain a clean city, offering services that protect public health and contribute to improving the quality of life of its residents.
The main activities of the Department include:
The Sanitation Department collaborates with collective compliance systems, companies, and competent authorities for the proper management of waste generated within the municipal boundaries of Larnaka Municipality.
Specifically:
- Packaging (PMD, Paper, Glass): GREEN DOT CYPRUS
- Batteries: AFIS CYPRUS
- Electrical and Electronic Equipment: WEEE CYPRUS
- Clothing and Footwear: Licensed Collection Systems
At this stage, the Department’s main collaborations focus on the Recycling pillar, which represents the third level in the Waste Hierarchy Pyramid.
For more information on the waste hierarchy and the relevant national and European legislation, please visit the websites of the Department of Environment and the Zero Waste Cyprus project.
The Municipality of Larnaka actively promotes recycling and environmental protection through the operation of its Temporary Green Point. This facility plays a key role in enhancing the quality of life for our residents while supporting the Municipality’s ongoing efforts to achieve recycling and separate waste collection targets.
At the Green Point, residents can bring a variety of materials, including household recyclables and other accepted items, listed below:
There is no charge for materials originating from households.
Please note that materials from commercial activities, contractors, industries, or other professional entities cannot be accepted.
Operating Hours:
The Temporary Green Point is located on Vasilis Michailidis Street (opposite the Agios Lazaros Technical School).

The cleaning of the road network and public open spaces is one of the main responsibilities of the Sanitation Department. These operations are carried out both by manual cleaning crews and by mechanical sweepers.
During the summer period, specifically from May to October, additional seasonal staff are employed to maintain cleanliness along the seafront area during the afternoon and evening hours.
The Sanitation Department carries out campaigns for grass cutting and the removal of debris and litter from sidewalks and road edges.
These campaigns are conducted twice a year, specifically during the periods March–July and September–December.
The Sanitation Department carries out the washing of sidewalks, squares, pedestrian streets, and other large surfaces throughout the year, with increased intensity during the summer months.
The aim is to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in public spaces, prioritizing high-traffic areas and main gathering points for residents.
Washing is performed in the morning hours using modern, state-of-the-art equipment.
The cleaning of private plots and other open spaces is the responsibility of the owners and must be carried out before the start of the fire prevention period to reduce the risk of wildfires.
Cleaning includes the removal of wild vegetation, wood, branches, rubble, unwanted items, and debris. All collected waste must be transported to licensed disposal facilities.
The responsibility for cleaning lies solely with the owner, even if unwanted materials have been placed on the property by third parties.
For owners who fail to clean their plots on time, the Sanitation Department undertakes the cleaning of private plots and other open spaces using specialized crews, charging the owners for the related costs, in order to protect residents and prevent fires.
Each year, the Municipality informs owners about the procedures and deadlines through official announcements.
On average, the Sanitation Department cleans approximately 1,000 private plots and other open spaces annually.
As part of its ongoing efforts to protect the community and the environment, the Sanitation Department carries out regular cleaning of the Municipality’s concrete and earthen rainwater channels.
This work involves cutting reeds and removing debris, leaves, mud, litter, and other materials that build up over time due to weather conditions or improper use. Cleaning is usually performed during the summer months, when water levels are lower, using both specialized machinery and manual labor.
Through these actions, the Municipality aims to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater, prevent flooding, and safeguard public health and safety.
The Sanitation Department is responsible for removing litter, waste, bulky items, and seaweed from the Municipality’s beaches.
Cleaning is carried out on a regular basis throughout the year and is intensified during the summer season.
In addition, during the summer months, the sand is cleaned at regular intervals using a specialized beach-cleaning machine, while temporary staff are also employed to assist with this work.
The Sanitation Department, in cooperation with the Municipal Health Service of Larnaka, is responsible for collecting dead stray animals found on the city’s streets.
The animals collected are mainly dogs, cats, and turtles.
The Municipality of Larnaka collaborates with a private company that provides services for the collection and proper management of animal by-products not intended for human consumption.
Residents who come across dead stray animals are requested to contact the Municipality of Larnaka so that appropriate collection and handling can be arranged.
